Epigentics

I first learned of epigenetics from my therapist 6 years ago. I had shared with my therapist that I experienced emotional and physical trauma when I was younger from a grandparent. I also shared that though I have vivid memories of inappropriate behaviors from my childhood with this caregiver; I was also experiencing somatic contraction in my body as an adult and wasn’t sure if there was a correlation?

In my therapy session I didn’t intend to speak to my childhood trauma as I was afraid to navigate mentally, emotionally and didn’t want to have to go back and remember an experience that I possibly could have blocked out.

To my surprise, my therapist said, I don’t have to go back and recollect… I instantly took a big exhale and felt my body soften with ease.

My therapist then asked if I was familiar with epigenetics, I said no. She spoke passionately about a new scientific study that had just been published about epigenetics, the cellular memory can be passed down from generation to generation, but she got even more excited to share that the study also proved that epigenetics could shift and change due to your environment.  Your genes do not control your biology.

My therapist validated my trauma from my childhood. She also said, possibly what I was feeling in my contractual body could have been passed down to me through my intergenerational patterns.  She then said, because we have spoken and processed my childhood trauma that now my cells are free from that generational trauma. Meaning if I were to conceive a child, my cellular imprint would be cleared and no longer passed on. Which is so fascinating and empowering.

I had been in therapy for 4 years and I had never mentioned this trauma from my childhood, I am so grateful I did. A big thank you to my therapist, Dr. Blair, for holding that safe space and softly nudging me to speak to my truth and teaching me about epigenetics! We quite literally are self- biologists with the ability to change our environment, relational behaviors with self , others and our perception.

We are the authors and architects of our lives; we have the free will to write and design our destiny.
